Acting Pak Prez Soomro says he can’t play any role in restoration of sacked judges

Mohammadmian SoomroKarachi, Aug 21 : Acting President of Pakistan Mohammadmian Soomro has said that it was not within the purview of his powers to play a role in the reinstatement of the sacked judges as he was in the office “temporarily”.

“The reinstatement of the judges is an affair that is directly linked to the federal government and I have nothing to do with it,” the Daily Times quoted him as telling reporters at the residence of a senior PML-N leader in the Sindh province.

American journalist covering terror threats goes missing in Pak

Karachi, Aug 21 : Two journalists, including one American - Nicholas Shamble who covered terrorism threats particularly an examination of the situation in Balochistan and the aftermath of the Lal Masjid operation in July of last year, have reportedly gone in Pakistan.

Nicholas who edits the US magazine “Smithsonian” went missing two days ago. Earlier, he was deported from Pakistan two years ago. The identity of the Pakistani journalist from Sindh is not known yet.

The American journalist arrived at a hotel in Karachi on August 12 and left for Islamabad on Monday, and he never arrived, the Daily Times quoted sources as saying.

Pakistan stocks plunge 3.6 per cent on political uncertainty

Karachi - Pakistani stocks sank on Wednesday as the fragile parliamentary coalition failed to reach consensus to restore deposed Supreme Court judges fired by former president Pervez Musharraf, traders said.

The benchmark KSE-100 Index fell 3.6 per cent or 393 points to close at 10,525 as investors anticipated a new era of jockeying over the fate of judges and the appointment of a new president.

"We thought Musharraf's resignation will bring stability and calm but it looks like the turf battle between the coalition partners will set towards another path of instability," said Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, the chairman of AKD Securities.

Karachi, Aug 20 : With the arrest of three persons, the Karachi Police have unearthed a graveyard scam in which the employees of Sakhi Hasan graveyard dug up old graves, sold away their skeletons and also the graves to new “customers” for anything between Rs11,000 and Rs15,000.

Burial of dead bodies was banned in the graveyard in 2003, but some undertakers there used to arrange burials against payment.

Consequently, a raid was conducted at the graveyard during which the police arrested three suspects — Khadim Hussain (assistant contractor of the graveyard), Yar Mohammed (watchman) and Riaz (grave digger) — and took them to investigation unit.
