Aligarh, Oct 18 : Vice President Hamid Ansari today asked Muslims to “seek equity, not concessions” from the government, and said that the community should introspect as a failure to participate in India’s growth story will lead to its marginalisation.
Addressing a gathering of over 500 Aligarh Muslim University alumni from as many as 20 countries, Ansari said the Muslim community should adapt to changing requirements of time and pointed out the need to draw every segment including women into the sphere of education.
Washington, Oct 18 : United States Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard Boucher described the Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement as “unique” which cannot be replicated elsewhere as a model.
He further said that the Bush Administration has made it clear that Pakistan cannot be the beneficiary of a similar deal.
United Nations, Oct 18 : India has asked the UN General Assembly to help forge consensus on moving towards non-discriminatory universal nuclear disarmament at a time when the concept is gaining momentum.
India’s delegate to UN Vishvjit P Singh said at the Assembly’s Committee on Disarmament and International Security that New Delhi has consistently attached highest priority to nuclear disarmament.
Washington, Oct 18 : Taking a strong exception to the recent US Army chief General W Casey’s visit to the base camp at the Siachen Glacier in Kashmir, Pakistan has said that Washington had always maintained that Kashmir is a “disputed area”, and that this visit “negated the traditional stand of US over Kashmir”.
Pakistan ambassador to US Hussain Haqqani said this while taking a serious notice of the Casey’s visit to Siachen.
Haqqani also a letter to the Pakistan Foreign Affairs office and Pentagon expression his country’s disappointment.
Ipoh (Malaysia), Oct. 18 (ANI): Deepavali celebrations in the “Little India” area of the Malaysian city of Ipoh have been launched with cultural performances and dances.
The ten-day-long festivities began on Thursday night, reports The Star.
The launch was marked by a touch of politics as a nationwide call was made for lifting the ban on the HINDRAF movement.
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, who launched the celebrations, condemned the ban.
“Deepavali is supposed to be a time of great hope and jubilation, but this year, it will be a somber one,” he said in his speech.
