Hong Kong - Twenty-one people have been arrested and 12,000 pirated discs seized in an operation against a DVD-making syndicate in Hong Kong, customs officers said Wednesday.
The syndicate smuggled pirated DVDs into Hong Kong from neighboring mainland China and then sold them through computer shops and other outlets, making more than
2,500 US dollars a day, investigators said.
In a two-day operation Monday and Tuesday, officers raided 17 locations, including apartments, shops and a restaurant, and arrested 14 men and seven women aged 16 to 70, a customms spokesman said.
Some 12,000 pirated DVDs, two cars, 14 computers, and cash and valuables worth more than 50,000 US dollars were seized in the operation. Some suspects were later released on bail.
