Demba Ba scored a hat-trick for Hoffenheim who missed a stoppage-time penalty in an entertaining 3-3 draw at VfB Stuttgart - enough to put coach Ralf Rangnick's side back on top on goal difference.

The results could benefit third-placed SV Hamburg who will go top if they can win at fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

Hamburg - English clubs suffered mixed fortunes in UEFA Cup round of 32 first-leg ties Thursday as Tottenham Hotspur conceded two late goals to go down to Shakhtar Donetsk while Manchester City drew away to FC Copenhagen.

Hamburg  - Brazilian midfielder Diego scored late in the game Wednesday to give German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen a share of the spoils against former Champions League winners AC Milan in a UEFA Cup first-leg game in the round of 32.

SV Hamburg comfortably won 3-0 at Dutch club NEC Nijmegen, while VfL Wolfsburg lost 2-0 at PSG.

In Bremen, Filippo Inzaghi thought he had given the Serie A club victory with his 36th-minute goal as Werder Bremen failed to capitalize on the many chances they created in the second half.
