Germany's oldest former chancellor Helmut Schmidt turns 90Berlin  - More than a quarter of a century after being ousted as West German chancellor, Helmut Schmidt is remarkably active for a man about to turn 90.

He has just written a new book, released a CD on which he performs piano works by Bach and appeared in television ads to promote the renowned weekly newspaper Die Zeit he helps publish.

Klitschko keeps belt with 7th-round stoppage of Rahman Mannheim, Germany  - Wladimir Klitschko used his height and reach advantage to score a seventh-round technical knockout of former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman.

The referee ended the bout as Klitschko had the smaller Rahman trapped in a corner, as the Ukrainian-born IBF and WBO heavyweight title holder delivered brutal combinations to the US fighter.

After completing his sixth title defence, Klitschko, 32, is now 52-3.

Stuttgart salvage draw against Munich

Hamburg - Sami Khedira got his second goal in the dying seconds as VfB Stuttgart battled to a 2-2 draw with 10-man champions Bayern Munich, who still climbed to the top of the table for the first time this season.

Khedira's spectacular volley in the 90th minute cancelled out Munich's lead from Tim Borowski and Luca Toni. Khedira had given Stuttgart the lead on the stroke of halftime and got the equalizer after Munich had Massimo Oddo sent off late on.

Munich have 35 points for a one-point advantage over surprise package TSG Hoffenheim, who need a draw on Sunday against Schalke to go into the six-week winter break at the top of the standings by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Germany rocked by new data theft scandal

Berlin - German police launched an investigation Saturday into the theft of confidential data on more than 10,000 credit card holders from a Berlin bank.

The information was apparently stolen from the Landesbank Berlin (LBB) and anonymously sent to the newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau.

A spokesman for Frankfurt in Frankfurt said initial investigations had shown that no serious abuse could be caused with the data. It was not possible to use the information to withdraw money or to copy the credit cards, a police spokesman said.

The names of customers from all over Germany, their addresses, credit card and bank account numbers as well as details of transactions were included in the microfiche copies sent to the newspaper in a parcel.

Fisichella and Sutil confirmed as Force India drivers for 2009

Force India f1 LogoHamburg - The Force India Formula One team ended speculation about its driver line-up for the 2009 season Saturday by confirming it will continue with Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Force India also confirmed that Vitantonio Liuzzi will be retained as the official test and reserve driver "to give complete driver continuity" for the team's second season in F1.

Earlier this week, team boss Vijay Mallya re-opened the issue of who would drive for Force India in 2009 when he said in an interview that he was yet to finalise his driver line-up.

Israeli author Amos Oz awarded German prize

Dusseldorf - Israeli author Amos Oz was presented on Saturday with a top German award for his political and literary work.

Oz, 69, was honoured by the city of Dusseldorf with the Heinrich Heine Prize for combining "literary creativity with political sensibility and humanistic commitment."

The award, worth 50,000 euros (66,000 dollars), is named after the 19th century German poet. It has been presented every two years since 1972 to personalities who share Heine's values of tolerance, human rights and mutual understanding of peoples.

Oz, who was born in Jerusalem in 1939, is one of Israel's best-known authors and political voices. He is a co-founder of the Israeli peace movement and a prominent champion of Palestinian rights.
