Germany's leading DAX index falls 2.8 per cent, but no panic

Frankfurt - German shares fell in early trading Monday, the DAX index of the leading 30 shares traded on the Frankfurt bourse falling 2.8 per cent to 6,059.

ECB says it is watching eurozone money market conditions closely

Frankfurt  - The European Central Bank (ECB) said Monday it was watching money market conditions closely in the eurozone, following indications that US bank Lehman Brothers would declare itself bankrupt.

The ECB said from its headquarters in Frankfurt it was ready to contribute to orderly conditions in the euro money market.

The US Federal Reserve said Sunday it was taking measures to stabilize conditions on financial markets, including accepting a wider range of financial instruments as collateral.

New vases are pretty with or without flowers

Frankfurt - Vases are essentially vessels for flowers, small branches trimmed off trees or bushes or tufts of grass, but they are currently the centre of attention for designers.

Many of the new models, both large and small, are decorative pieces of art that function without flowers. The designs range between two extremes. One takes shapes from nature or day-to-day life, reproduces them or enlarges them. They are sometimes richly adorned, sometimes inventively designed.

In the other extreme, their style is diminished, said Nadine Philipp of Frankfurt's convention centre, which organizes an interior design show. Both styles require a high level of skill to create.

Top German banker predicts early end to financial crisis

Deutsche BankFrankfurt - Josef Ackermann, chief executive of Deutsche Bank, stuck Wednesday to his optimistic prediction that the world financial crisis will be over soon.

His remarks at a conference in Frankfurt contrasted with the more pessimistic Eurozone outlook the same day in Brussels from European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet.

Ackermann told a gathering organized by the German newspaper Handelsblatt that the end of the downturn was becoming more tangible: "We see a stabilization.
