Budapest  - Unions called off a strike at Budapest's Ferihegy international airport Wednesday, but had yet to reach a compromise with airport management in a dispute over terms and conditions.

Passengers were faced with delays on Monday afternoon when two unions representing ground staff announced the resumption of a strike that had been suspended after
12 days on December 22.

Budapest  - Ukraine restarted the delivery of gas to Hungary early Tuesday afternoon, the Hungarian gas distributor FGSZ said in a statement.

"This crisis has demonstrated that, although Ukraine remains the main transit country, there is also a need for alternative supply routes such as North and South Stream and Nabucco," Foreign Minister Kinga Goncz told the press.

Budapest  - One of three terminals at Budapest's Ferihegy International Airport was closed from 4 pm Monday as ground staff resumed a strike over pay and conditions.

In a repeat of the first days of industrial action six weeks earlier, crowds of hundreds of confused passengers amassed in the check-in area after security gates were closed.

Ground staff began their strike over terms and conditions on December 10.

On December 22, the unions suspended the strike for the holidays and returned to the negotiating table.

Budapest  - The Hungarian National Bank cut its base rate by fifty basis points to 9.5 per cent at its monthly rate-setting meeting on Monday, in line with the expectations of analysts.

The deputy governor of the bank, Ferenc Karvalics, told the press that the monetary council had considered three possible cuts of 50, 75 or 100 basis points before settling for the most cautious option.

A basis point is defined as one hundredth of a per cent.

"Management has made no serious attempt in the past few weeks to solve the industrial dispute," the two unions behind the strike said in a statement.

Budapest Airport announced that passengers should expect delays of a few hours, but no cancellations should be necessary.

Budapest  - The most prominent party on Hungary's extreme right, Jobbik, held a rally in front of the parliament building on Saturday to protest the outlawing of its paramilitary offshoot, the Hungarian Guard.

"The court of first instance ruling on the disbanding of the Magyar Garda (Hungarian Guard) doesn't mean anything. They will continue their work," said Gabor Vona, president of both Jobbik and the Hungarian Guard.
