Paraglider survives 11 hours hanging from high-voltage cables Bogota  - A Colombian paraglider was rescued alive and well Monday, after hanging from high-voltage cables for 11 hours in the northwestern province of Antioquia.

Alberto Ocampo jumped in a mountainous area in the town of Bello, near Medellin, but his paraglider was pushed by the wind and got caught in a 110,000 volt wire.

The flow of electricity was cut off on Sunday afternoon, to allow a rescue operation that ended successfully in the early hours of Monday.

Rebel attack leaves six dead, including children, in Colombia Bogota  - An attack by leftist rebels in the Colombian town of Roberto Payan left six people dead, including three children, Colombian authorities said Wednesday.

The attack was perpetrated by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) around midday Tuesday, and it was aimed at the town police station, said Roberto Payan Mayor Pedro Angulo.

Initially following the attack, three children - aged 8, 11 and 12 - were reported dead. Ten injured people were taken to hospitals in Tumaco and in Pasto.

Spain, MadridBogota/Madrid - Gunmen have killed the brother of a Colombian drug trafficker who was shot dead at a Spanish hospital a few days earlier, Colombian and Spanish media reported Wednesday.

Fabio Vargas, 46, was brother to Leonidas Vargas, 59, once a powerful cocaine lord known as the King of Caqueta.

The body of Fabio Vargas was found on a roadside in a rural area in Valle del Cauca department, Colombian authorities said.

Vargas, who carried a fake identity document had been shot numerous times, as was his young actress girlfriend.

Rebels desert along with two hostages in Colombia Bogota  - Two Colombian rebels turned themselves in to the police Tuesday alongside two hostages they were guarding, in apparent response to government offers of rewards for turning themselves in, the authorities said.

Two members of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) identified with the aliases "Ernesto" and "David" fled a camp between the villages of Cubarral and Vistahermosa, in the central Colombian province of Meta.

Colombian rebels kill five people on Christmas day

Bogota  - Colombian rebels shot dead five people on Christmas day as they were driving to their country house, local media reported Friday quoting police in the northeastern province of Arauca.

Police suspected the killings to be the work of the National Liberation Army or ELN. One of the victims was a former ELN member and had recently entered a government rehabilitation programme, said regional police chief Luis Antonio Ortiz.

Four of the victims were from the same family, while the fifth was a friend travelling with them. Two others were injured.

The ELN is smaller than the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and both leftist groups are active in Arauca.
