Management placements unaffected, says Samir Barua

Ahmedabad, Nov 19 : The summer campus placements at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) remain unaffected for the present by the global economic meltdown, says director Samir Barua.

All 300 students in the Post-Graduate Programmes (PGP) in the management and the entire 21 PGP Agri-Business management 2008-10 batch have been placed for the next year''s on-job training projects, as per officials.

Barua said that the major recruiters of the previous years were present for the placements reaffirming their commitment to select talent from IIMA campus but actual position would be clear only after long-term recruitment commitments are out.

Gujarat’s tobacco farmers fear a bleak future

Ahmedabad, Nov.9 : Gujarat, a hub of tobacco production, is today a major raw material provider to Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala in the country. 

About 70 per cent of the population in Anand, Kheda, Vadodara, Sabarkantha and Banaskantha districts of Gujarat is connected to this unorganized sector.

But a sense of uncertainty prevails among the tobacco growers of Gujarat, following the Indian health ministry’s directive on mandatory pictorial warnings on all tobacco products from December 1. 

Government''s directive has put a question mark on the livelihood of a majority of the crisis-ridden Gujarat tobacco industry.

Recession pushes down demand for corporate gifts and sweets in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Oct 25 : With the festival of lights ''Diwali'' just round the corner, companies caught up in the global financial crisis have cut down on corporate gifts.

Every year during this festive season, the demand for corporate gifts is on an all time high, especially in Gujarat.

But with the US meltdown trickling down to India as well, many companies have resorted to cost cutting and are refraining from purchasing expensive gifts or token gifts usually presented to employees on Diwali.

Shopkeepers and traders say that their business has gone down by more than 30 per cent.

The bowlers of the rockets team displayed a fine performance when they restricted Tigers batting to 131. The batting for Rockets was opened by Murray Goodwin and Ryan Campbell, who scored fours and sixes as the Tigers’ attack weakened under the assault and the Rockets speed away to 137 without loss in 12 overs.
