Kabul - At least two civilians were killed in a US airstrike in western Afghanistan, the latest in a series of incidents in which non-combatants have died in anti-insurgency operations, officials said Thursday.
The latest airstrike took place on Wednesday in Ghormach district of the western province of Badghis after a group of Taliban militants attacked US military troops in the area.
Washington, Nov 6 : An internal US military report has reportedly found that the deadly attack on a US outpost in eastern Afghanistan in July was executed with the support of local police, government leaders and villagers.
In the attack launched on July 12 by about 200 insurgents, as many as nine US troops were killed, and 27 wounded. At least 52 of the attackers were killed and another 45 wounded, the report said.
It also said the incident was an example of repeated problems in the volatile mountain region where the local population was offering “passive and active support” to the insurgents, which also had infiltrated the country’s security forces, reported the Dawn.
Kabul - A US-led coalition airstrike killed 40 civilians Monday, reported Afghan authorities on Wednesday as President Hamid Karzai condemned the action.
The airstrike took place in the Shah Walikot district of southern Kandahar province on late Monday after a group of militants attacked US-led troops in the area, Rahmatuallah Raoufi, the provincial governor said.
Kabul - Barack Obama winning in the US presidential election could be a starting point for a leadership change in Afghanistan, opposition politicians predicted, as many ordinary Afghans welcomed the victory and hoped the new administration could put an end to the country's decades-long conflict.
"I think the change in the leadership of the US government could be a starting point for a change in Afghanistan," Doud Sultanzoy, member of lower house of parliament said Wednesday.
Kabul - Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Wednesday that he hoped Barack Obama's victory in the US presidential election would bring peace for war-weary Afghans and urged the president-elect to reduce civilian casualties in Afghanistan after being sworn in.
At a press conference held in his fortified presidential palace, Karzai congratulated Obama, who defeated his Republican rival and fellow senator, John McCain.
Kabul - Taliban militants riding on a motorbike killed the deputy intelligence chief of the southern province of Kandahar, while NATO forces killed a senior Taliban commander in the same region, officials said on Tuesday.
Azizullah, who goes by a single name, the deputy provincial intelligence chief, was killed when he was on his way home in the Loy Wala area of Kandahar city on Monday evening, said Abdul Qayoum Katawazi, the provincial chief of intelligence.
He said the attackers, on a motorbike, shot him dead and then escaped the area.
Taliban militants took responsibility for the attack in a statement posted at their website.
