One dead, two wounded in clash in breakaway region Abkhazia

Abkhazia MapMoscow - One man was killed and two injured in an exchange of fire in the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia on Saturday, officials in the Abkhazian capital Sukhumi said.

The clash took place after Abkhazian border troops discovered a group of six people attempting to cross the border from mainland Georgia near the city of Gali, the Interfax agency cited Abkhazian officials as saying.

The casualties in the firefight were said to be intruders, who Abkhazia claims were Georgian saboteurs.

There was no comment from the Georgian side on the incident.

Europe unites to condemn Kremlin

London, Aug. 28 : European leaders like British Foreign Secretary David Miliband have condemned Russia for jeopardizing European security by recognizing Georgia''s two breakaway regions -- Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Speaking in Ukrainian capital Kiev, Miliband said that Russia was "more isolated, less trusted and less respected" as a result of its actions in Georgia.

These actions, he said, breached a United Nations Resolution, approved by Moscow last April, which reaffirmed Georgia''s sovereignty over Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Miliband placed the onus for avoiding a new Cold War firmly on Russian President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia.
