Punjab takes to renewable energy

Punjab, Dec 23: While global warming takes the centre-stage on the world arena, Punjab has taken a lead by endorsing renewable energy sources for a brighter future.

The 1.0 MW (mega-watt) Link Canal Mini Hydel Project in Sangrur District’s Khatra village is a move to promote renewable energy.

With eight such projects, Punjab has made a beginning in slashing down the usage of conventional energy sources. Mini Hydel projects not only help Punjab earn extra power but they cut emissions of the greenhouse gases.

Village Bassian Baidwan in District Fatehgarh Sahib is a village that believes in renewable energy sources.

Surinder Singh, a farmer, has installed a bio-mass plant in 1985 to cater to his household requirement for cooking gas. In 2002, he set up a solar power plant costing 9000 dollars, 90 per cent of whose cost was subsidised by the Punjab Government to promote renewable energy.

“It is economical as compared to conventional energy. The rates per unit for conventional energy are increasing rapidly. If solar energy is utilised, it has many benefits. We have spent money once and now there are expenses and no electricity bills, ” said Singh.

As for the plans for energy conservation, the Punjab government has encouraged many government buildings and colleges to become self-sufficient in energy by co-generation.

The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), which is responsible for development and promotion of renewable energy in the state, is proud of its building which is displayed as an example of energy conservation motivating the others to follow.

PEDA Chief Executive Tejinder Pal S Sidhu said: “The state is almost 20-30 per cent deficit as far as energy is concerned. So we have made an effort that we must contribute at least 10 per cent to power generation and offset the conventional fuels. ”

Punjab's effort in the promotion of renewable energy sources is but a drop in the ocean. As the whole planet is warming with the emission from fossil-fuels, a small effort brings well deserved praise. (ANI)
