Professor Creates Her Robot Look-Alike
A socially intelligent robot, which looks like a human, has been revealed by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) scientists in Singapore. The robot, named Nadine, has been created by Professor Nadia Thalmann and looks just like her creator. Nadine has brunette hair and soft skin. The robot has been programmed to have her distinct personality, along with moods and emotions.
On December 29, 2015, the humanoid receptionist was unveiled at NTU. Thalmann believes that such physical social robots are likely to become a part of our offices and homes in near future. Nadine has the capability of greeting you with a smile and looking in eyes while having a conversation. The robot, which will also shake hands, can change her moods from being happy to sad while talking to people.
Nadine is equipped with sharp memory thereby, capable of recognizing people and remembering conversations as well. The intelligence software, with which Nadine has been equipped, is similar to Microsoft’s Cortana and Apple’s Siri.
"As countries worldwide face challenges of an aging population, social robots can be one solution to address the shrinking workforce, become personal companions for children and the elderly at home, and even serve as a platform for healthcare services in future”, said Thalmann.
She said Nadine will act like a real companion, who forever accompanies you and is always conscious or surroundings and events. The robot has been powered with the knowledge of language and etiquette. A video of Nadine and Thalmann having conversation received more than 25,000 viewers until now.
