Polish resolution calls on president to ratify Lisbon Treaty
Warsaw- Two Polish political parties drafted a resolution Wednesday calling on President Lech Kaczynski to ratify the Lisbon Treaty amid his recent comments that it was "pointless" to sign it after a no vote in an Irish referendum.
The resolution, prepared by the Civic Platform (PO) and the Polish People's Party (PSL), appeals to Kaczynski to finalize the ratification process, PO head Zbigniew Chlebowski announced on Wednesday. It states ratification is needed to strengthen the European Union and should be continued both in Poland and other EU nations.
Chlebowski said Poland should send a clear political signal that it values EU reforms and demands a strong, efficient union. Sebastian Karpiniuk, of the Civic Platform, added he hoped the resolution would mobilize the president towards quick ratification.
The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) also planned a resolution on the issue, but Chlebowski said one resolution will be prepared by all three parties.
EU officials on Tuesday reacted to Kaczynski's comment by urging Poland to continue ratification and pointing out that the president had earlier not only signed the treaty but had also been one of its main supporters.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk was also critical of Kaczynski's statement and said the treaty is in Polish and EU interests. He was joined by the head of the Polish Peasants' Party and the Polish parliament speaker, who also both called on Tuesday for the treaty's ratification.
Poland's parliament ratified the treaty in April, but it still needs Kaczynski's signature and ratification from all 27 EU members.
So far only 11 countries have formally completed ratification. The process has also been suspended in Germany and the Czech Republic, who are awaiting the go-ahead from their countries' constitutional courts. (dpa)
