Philippines Opens First Breast Milk Bank

Very first community milk bank of the world has started its operations the Makati city of Philippines. It is one of the first milk Bank in the entire world where about 200 mothers donated their milk in small quantity. The launch of this milk Bank is a fruit of the efforts of Mr. Sen. Pia S. Cayetano who is a strong promoter of breastfeeding. The idea of this milk Bank is suggested by the Compañero Rene Cayetano Foundation. Makati City Health Department has also supported this new idea and offered all type of help for its establishment.

Some other organizations also supported the move and contributed with money, milk and required equipment. A post-natal equipment supplier Medela supplied 10 manual breast pumps worth P 1800. Maricris Capote donated the milk for about 15 minutes. She is a strong supporter of breast milk and a mother of eight month son. The chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Cayetano said that the current step will also inspire the other women in the region to donate milk for needy children.

The donated milk was uncontaminated and sent to the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Sta. Cruz, Manila. The hospital has all the required apparatus for storing milk. It has three coolers and facility to preserve the milk for half year. This preserved milk will serve the purpose of needy, weak and premature babies. The set up of this milk bank will convey a positive message across the world as the world is celebrating the World Breastfeeding Month this August.
