Manila - The Philippine Army has launched carless days in all its camps throughout the country to conserve fuel amid spiralling prices, officials said Thursday.

The Army's chief, Lieutenant General Victor Ibrado, said cars have been banned inside Army camps on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays since Tuesday.

"Any Army personnel found violating this standard operating procedure shall be dealt with accordingly," Army spokesman Colonel Romeo Brawner said.

At the Army's main camp in Manila, personnel living outside camps and visitors are required to park their vehicles near the entrance. They can then take a shuttle or walk or bike to their destinations inside the camp.

Brawner said the carless days would also promote physical fitness by encouraging walking and biking. (dpa)
