Chidambaram asks people of Orissa to maintain peace, harmony

P ChidambaramNew Delhi, Dec 24 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram today appealed to the people of Orissa to maintain peace and harmony among different communities.

In a statement issued, Chidambaram said, "The situation in Orissa has been engaging the attention of the Central Government in the last two weeks. There was a call for a shutdown on December 25 by a number of organizations that had demanded the arrest of persons involved in the killing of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati."

Anti terror law bill placed in Parliament

P ChidambaramNew Delhi, Dec. 17 : The bill for introducing a stringent terror law and a plan for the setting up of a central investigation agency on the lines of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was placed in the Parliament on Wednesday.

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram tabled the National Investigating Agency (NIA) Bill and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendments Bills in the house, and opened the debate on the same.

Chidambarm appealed to the members to pass the bills unanimously and promised to rectify defects in the legislation, if any, during the next session in February.

Union Home Minister P.ChidambaramNew Delhi, Dec. 17 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has termed Chattisgarh's anti-naxalite group, 'Salva Judum' as a non-state actor.

Replying to queries during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Chidambaram said the Centre is not in favour of "non-state" actors taking the job of law enforcement into their hands.

"We are not in favour of non-state actors taking law enforcement in their hands," he said.

Maharashtra CM to meet PM, Chidambaram today

New Delhi, Dec 12 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan will meet Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram here today.

This will be his first visit to New Delhi after becoming Chief Minister on December 8.

According to sources, he is also scheduled to visit his hometown Nanded and Nagpur on Sunday.

Chavan, an MLA from Nanded and son of former Union Minister S B Chavan, was elected a Member of the Parliament for the first time in 1987.

Chavan replaced Vilasrao Deshmukh who resigned from his post after the Mumbai terror attacks last month.
