""The state of Pakistan is in no way responsible. Even the White House and the American CIA have said that today. We''re part of the victims. I''m a victim. The state of Pakistan is a victim. We are the victims of this war. I am sorry for the Indians," The News quoted Zardari telling US talk show host Larry King.

“The architects of this calamity in Mumbai have managed to raise a threat on our other (eastern) border. As we have these people (militants) on the run along our western border (with Afghanistan), our attention is being diverted at this critical time,” The News quoted Zardari as saying in a telephone interview from Islamabad.

In an interview with a British newspaper, Zardari warned that provocation by rogue "non-state actors" posed the danger of a return to war between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

"Even if the militants are linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, who do you think we are fighting?" asked Zardari.
