People who reverse their diabetes and then keep their weight down remain diabetes free, Study shows

Newcastle University has come up with a new study suggesting that people who reverse their diabetes and then shed down their weight can stay diabetes free in long term. They will have to keep their weight under check.

Besides, the team discovered that even patients who suffered from Type 2 diabetes for over a decade can reverse their condition.

Published recently in Diabetes Care, the study is the latest research done by world-renowned Professor Roy Taylor, Professor of Medicine and Metabolism at Newcastle University, who also serves in Newcastle Hospitals.

The study belongs to a growing body of proof showing that people with Type 2 diabetes who shed their weight can reverse their condition as fat gets removed from their pancreas, which turns the production of insulin to normal levels.

An earlier study, appeared in 2011, headed by Professor Taylor, showed that you can reverse your diabetes by a very low calorie diet. The study caused international interest, however it was conducted for quite a short period. As the study was just eight weeks long, the question stayed there that if the diabetes would stay away or not, in the long term.

The latest study had 30 volunteers with Type 2 diabetes who followed the same diet of 600 to 700 calories per day. Participants shed on average 14 kilograms and then in the next more than 6 months they didn’t regain any weight.

The group contained a number of people, having longer duration diabetes, described as over 8 years to 23 years.

As a whole, 12 patients who had had diabetes for below 10 years were able to reverse their condition. Post half a year they remained free from diabetes. Indeed, 6 months later a thirteenth patient reversed their diabetes.

Although, the volunteers who shed their weight stayed overweight or obese, they had cut sufficient weight for fat removal from the pancreas, allowing normal insulin production.
