Pakistan envoy to Iran calls for referendum in Kashmir
Islamabad, Oct 28 : Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran Shafiq Saeed has said that the people of Kashmir have the legitimate right to decide whether they want to live in India or Pakistan by holding referendum.
“The UNSC passed two Resolutions in 1948 and 1949 calling on both India and Pakistan to hold referendum under the auspices of the UN in a bid to let Kashmiri people decide on whether to join India or Pakistan,” The Nation quoted Saeed as saying in a statement.
Regretting that neither the UN nor the Organisation of the Islamic Conference could settle the Kashmir issues, the envoy said Pakistan believed that the dispute should be resolved through negotiations.
Saeed said that Pakistan has called for opening borders of Kashmir and reducing military forces of the two countries based in Kashmir.
He went on to call for Iranian mediation efforts to resolve the longstanding dispute between India and Pakistan. (ANI)
