One killed and one injured in military helicopter crash near ColumbiaAuthorities have said that the weekend crash of a military helicopter while taxiing at an air force base near Columbia, S. C., killed one pilot and injured a second.

The AH-64 Apache crashed during training at McEntire Joint Air National Guard Base Sunday afternoon, The State newspaper in Columbia has reported.

Columbia TV station WIS also reported that Brig. Gen. Les Eisner identified the dead pilot Monday as 1st Lt. Jonathan Shively Jr., 33, of Jamestown. The second pilot, Chief Warrant Officer Roger Carpenter, 46, of Spartanburg, was hospitalized in stable condition, Eisner said.

According to the State, the general said that the accident occurred as the pilots, attached to the 116th Army Aviation group, were finishing a weekend of training.

Eisner said on Sunday, "It has been many, many decades since we have had an AH-64 crash."

It was further noted by the reports that operations at the base were shut down while it was determined what caused the aircraft to roll over while taxiing near a ramp. The investigation is expected to take a week to 10 days. (With Inputs from Agencies)
