Non-subsidized LPG cylinder now costs Rs 953
Last month the government at the centre capped the maximum number of subsidized LPG cylinders at six per household, and added that any cylinder beyond that limit will be available at a market price of Rs 817.50. But, a non-subsidized LPG cylinder in Nagpur now costs Rs 953 each, an almost 17 per cent up from last month's announced price of Rs 817.50.
Users of the 5kg LPG cylinder are the worst hit by the price hike. The price of 5kg LPG cylinder has jumped almost 85 per cent, from Rs 294 in September to Rs 542 in October.
It may be noted here that oil marketing companies will declare new rates for non-subsidized LPG cylinders on the 1st of every month. The rates on the 1st of every month shall be applicable for the whole of that month.
In the remaining months of the current financial year, consumers can avail of just three subsidized LPG cylinders, following which they will have to purchase non-subsidized cylinders.
Those who do not have regular connections are being charged even higher rates, and following the announcement of the new policy last month, neighbours and relatives are just turning down all requests to lend a LPG cylinder.
Anuradha, a housewife, said, "I was shocked when a dealer asked me for Rs. 1,165 for a cylinder, but I had to pay as it was an emergency. My relatives and friends also refused to help me."
As the festive season is imminent, usage of LPG cylinders will definitely increase in a majority of households.
