Nokia acknowledges using misleading marketing material for new Lumia handsets

Nokia acknowledges using misleading marketing material for new Lumia handsetsAfter having acknowledged last week that it had faked a video used in promotional material for its newly-unveiled Windows 8-based Lumia 920 smartphone, Finnish handset-maker Nokia has now disclosed that the ‘still photography’ and some other pieces of its Lumia 920 marketing material had also been simulated.

Nokia had apparently used a hand-held video camera and lighting rig, instead of the Lumia 920 PureView, for clicking the contentious promotional material for its new handset. The company had asserted that the technology coming aboard its new smartphones – scheduled to hit the markets by October end - was notably superior to the technology which its competitors were presently using.

With reports emerging, soon after the unveiling of Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 handsets, that Nokia had not used the PureView camera of Lumia 920 for shooting the pictures and the video, the company extended an apology for having resorted to misleading marketing materials for its forthcoming line of Windows 8 smartphones.

In fact, along with apologizing for the faked photos and video, Nokia also admitted that the video stabilization capabilities, which it had boasted the Lumia 920 was equipped with, did not actually exist; though they would likely be available when the PureView camera is released.

Acknowledging that the promotional material was simulated, Heidi Lemmetyinen – Editor-in-Chief of Nokia Media Relations – said in an official blog post: "In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (OIS), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS.”
