Scott Kelly breaking US Space Flight records on evening of 15th anniversary of continuous human presence on ISS

The commander of current Expedition 45 Crew and the US astronaut, Scott Kelly, is going to break US space flight records on the eve of the 15th anniversary of continuous human presence on the International Space Station (ISS) on November 2, 2015.

Last Friday, Kelly completed 383 days in space, and broke the US astronaut Mike Fincke’s previous record of 363 cumulative days on orbit.

On October 29, Kelly is also going to break another record on his 216 consecutive days in space. On that day, he will beat astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria’s record for the single-longest space flight by an American. Lopez-Alegria stayed in space for 215 days in 2006 as commander of the Expedition 14 crew.

Hidden Chemistry Lab unearthed in University of Virginia

When a worker was doing renovations to the iconic Rotunda at the University of Virginia, he unearthed a hidden chemistry lab. As per the school officials, the lab was directly associated with the third US President Thomas Jefferson, who helped in designing the building.

The ‘chemical hearth’ dates back to the 1820s. It is thought to be among the few left in the world. It has two sources of heat for the conduction of experiments and a system to pull out fumes.

The University of Virginia press release suggested that the room, which has been described as ‘a semi-circular niche in the north end of the Lower East Oval Room’ was preserved because the hearth’s walls were sealed in the mid-1800s.

Researchers develop unique Computer System that outperforms Smartest Humans on Earth

A team of researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Computer Science Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) claimed to have developed a unique computer system based on artificial intelligence that can outperforms even the smartest humans on Earth.

Data Science Machine (DSM) searches for patterns in data sets like a database of promotional sale dates or weekly profits. Computers can do perform many things faster than humans, but machines still requires human input to choose what to find in a huge data set.

In other words, such machines require human inputs to find meaning in patterns. The new computer system developed by MIT and CSAIL researchers now aims to automate that too.

NES turns 30 on October 18

Prolonged Rest Does Not Aid Recovery for Concussions

During a meeting this week in Pittsburgh around 37 concussion clinicians and researchers gathered for a discussion on concussion. The experts produced a consensus that prolonged rest does not help in recovery of patients and rather worsens the situation.

Dr. David Okonkwo of UPMC said in a statement that experts during the gathering in Pittsburgh accepted how critical it was to bring top experts together and finally reach a conclusion.

“This is paradigm shifting. People may underestimate the impact of this, but on a global basis, every single person who sustains a concussion is told prolonged rest”, he said.

The experts gathered during the meeting reached at conclusion that the previous beliefs about concussion and its treatment are wrong and concussions are treatable.

39% to 51% of bugs that cause infections after surgery already resistant to standard antibiotics

Since long warning have been given regarding how bacteria are cleverly evading the best antibiotics used by us. Such a thing has been seen with MRSA strains and increasingly with C. difficile infections that are common in hospitals. This has indicated that the infections that usually would clear up with a short course of drugs might no longer be controlled. For some infection the case can worsen as there may be no strong enough medications left to fight the bacteria at all.

When strep throat or sinus infections are considered, it is definitely not a welcome scenario. But such a thing could prove fatal for infections after surgery and for cancer patients on chemotherapy, because their immune systems are very weaker.
