With a key market index up nearly 100 points within an hour of trading on Thursday, Indian equities began trading on the first day of the new fiscal on a firm note, backed by strong cues from other Asian markets.

Opening at 17,555.04 points against the previous close at 17,527.77 points, the sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) rose to a high of 17,654.79 points soon after.

With a gain of 97.88 points, or 0.56 percent, an hour into trading, the index was ruling at 17,625.65 points.

They will investigate the death of an 8-month-old giraffe at Utah's Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Federal officials have said.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported on Wednesday that the review was prompted by a request by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Jamar the giraffe was found dead in his enclosure Sunday. Jamar was standing off alone shaking when she saw the calf last on Thursday, Zoo patron Shawna Silva said.

She said "You could see his body trembling. He did not look well."

Robert Snyder, 55, author of the "Chess for Juniors" book series, was given an open sentence Tuesday by Larimer County District Judge Dave Williams, the Denver Post reported on Wednesday. The newspaper also said that the sentence means he will serve at least 12 years and possibly life behind bars.

Oil rose as the euro's rise against the dollar offset U.S. government data showing crude inventory rose more than expected and gasoline stocks had a surprise build.  U.S. Energy Information Administration oil inventory report showed crude oil stocks rose by 2.9 million barrels to 354.2 million barrels last week. The increase topped the forecast for a rise of 2.4 million barrels, while gasoline inventories logged a modest but surprise gain. Now support for the crude is seen at 3717 and below could see a test of 3683. Resistance is now likely to be seen at 3774, a move above could see prices testing 3797.
