1500 MW of nuclear power to be added by 2009

1500 MW of nuclear power to be added by 2009India is all set to avail optimum use of the civil nuclear cooperation agreements with Russia, France and United States.  The country has already crossed the nuclear isolation era after necessary approvals from countries of nuclear supplier group. It can now import nuclear fuel and sophisticated technology from around the world for peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Government has set a target to add 1500 MW of nuclear power in the national grid by 2009. The Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, Anil Kakodkar said that the country would build 6-8 units of 1000 MW each over the next 9-10 years. Mr. Kakodkar was speaking at the 11th India Power Forum meet.

The nuclear program of India was earlier impacted due to the shortage of fuel and the required technology. But the scenario has changed after the completion of Indo-US nuclear deal. Country's first fast breeder is expected to get commissioned in 2010-11, which would help to achieve the nuclear power target of 20,000 MW by 2020.

India has capacity to generate 4,120 MW of nuclear power but power is being generated at half the capacity due to shortage of fuel. Country aims to generate 10,000 MW of nuclear power through PHWRs, about 5,000 MW through imported reactors and about 2,500 MW through Fast Breeder Reactors as per energy commission chairman. Government is in touch with various foreign nuclear vendors for efficient use of energy which is necessary to sustain growth of 8 per cent through 2031.
