Sun unveils open-source storage line

On Monday; Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems line was unveiled by Sun Microsystems. The company is hoping to boost up its business through it, which at present has taken a down track.

Earlier, the Sun Storage 7000 line was known as “Amber Road”, and by adding open source to its hardware, it hopes to better the company’s storage business. The customers would also find it easier to install and configure the systems and reduce costs through this move.

The performance would be increased through the three open-source storage and the Sun's Solaris Zettabyte file system (ZFS) will help in giving lower cooling requirements. The three mew models are as follows:-

1 Sun Storage 7110: Ultra compact model with 2 terabytes (TB) of storage. Expected to carry a price tag that begins from $10,000.

2 Sun Storage 7210: Midrange storage having functions like up to 48 TB of storage capacity in a four-unit form factor; also has support for write-optimized solid-state disks that use Sun's Flash Hybrid Storage Pool technology. Pricing begins at $34,995.

3 Sun Storage 7410: Highly configurable storage system with support for up to a half-petabyte of capacity that includes support for read- and write-optimized solid-state drives and the Flash Hybrid Storage Pool technology. Pricing begins at $57,490 for a single-node version (12 TB)

Other than this, these systems can also be acquired in clustered configurations, and the clustered 12TB version is expected to begin at $89,490.
