Determined Musharraf throws down the gauntlet over impending Impeachment battle
Islamabad, Aug 8: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has reportedly said that he won’t resign from the Presidency in the event of Impeachment Motion brought against him, and that he would contest every charge to be levelled against him by the federal government.
After it became amply clear that the Government will soon bring an impeachment motion against him, Musharraf held consultations with legal aides till late last night, and also made important telephone calls to his allies to foil the ruling coalition’s bid to impeach him.
Sources privy to the developments at the Presidency said that Musharraf had a long meeting with legal guru Sharifuddin Pirzada to explore the constitutional and legal ways to avoid impeachment. The duo discussed all options available with the President, including the use of Article 58 (2b) of the Constitution, promulgation of a state of emergency, and facing the Impeachment in parliament, the Daily Times quoted the sources as saying.
They said that the President is not interested in discussing the option of resigning from office and wants to defeat the impeachment motion.
Among the political allies whom Musharraf contacted over phone to devise the next political strategy, included former interior minister Aftab Sherpao, former information minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and PML-Functional chief Pir Pagaro.
Musharraf asked them to help muster support in the parliament to defeat the Impeachment Motion. His allies were confident that the President would survive the Impeachment. Appearing on various talk shows on TV, they said the government lacked required strength in parliament for the attempt to succeed.
According to sources, President told his political allies that he would justify all his acts during the last nine years and respond to allegations that the ruling coalition had levelled against him. He vowed not to surrender without contesting charges against him. (ANI)
