At least two people reported killed in South Ossetia clashes
Tbilisi/Moscow - Two people were killed and 10 injured in clashes in the Georgia breakaway province of South Ossetia, the South Ossetian leadership reported Friday from the capital Tskhinvali.
According to the report, the Georgian military attacked South Ossetia from three sides with rocket-propelled grenades, the Russian news agency Interfax reported, adding that South Ossetia mobilized its troops after the latest escalation.
The Georgian government in Tbilisi however claimed that its troops were only reacting to fire from South Ossetia.
In the last few years, there have been increasing skirmishes leading to deaths and injuries in the conflict region.
Earlier this year, Russia intensified its contacts to the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, stationing troops in the region. (dpa)
