The 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron SUV and its Sportback variant are the high-performance iterations of the Audi Q8 e-tron SUV, boasting a robust tri-motor setup. These all-electric models, which will replace the 2023 Audi e-tron line, have been equipped with a notably bigger 114-kWh (106 kWh usable) battery pack, which promises a notable 20 per cent increase in capacity for a substantially longer driving range on a single charge.

However, in spite of battery power enhancement, the recent EPA ratings have revealed that the Audi SQ8 e-tron SUV as well as the SQ8 Sportback e-tron SUV are still relatively hungry for energy, especially when equipped with the optional 22-inch wheels.

According to newly released EPA data, the combined range for the SQ8 e-tron SUV stands at 253 miles with 20-inch wheels, which is obviously a notable improvement compared to the earlier model. However, this figure tumbles to 218 miles when the larger wheels are opted, showcasing a reduction of 35 miles or 14 per cent in driving range compared to the model with 20-inch wheels.

These sportier e-tron SUVs don’t receive as substantial a range boost as their dual-motor counterparts even with the transition from a 95-kWh battery to the bigger 114-kWh battery. The regular Q8 e-tron and its Sportback variant (equipped with 20-inch wheels) boast higher driving range of 285 and 296 miles, respectively. It suggests that performance-focused enthusiasts should be ready to trade off some range for enhanced handling and agility.

Moreover, the 22-inch wheels lead to a notable increase in energy consumption, with both models consuming 63 MPGe or approx. 535-Wh per mile, which shows that the new models remain energy guzzlers within the EV spectrum.

When it comes to charging capabilities, the Audi SQ8 e-tron can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent state-of-charge (SoC) in around 31 minutes using a DC fast charger, hitting speeds of approx. 170 kilowatts. The EVs also offer AC charging. The new variants of the vehicle come equipped with a standard 9.6-kW on-board charger. Additionally, there is an optional 19.2-kW charger, priced at $1,850, for providing a unique dual-charging port solution.

However, despite the aforementioned higher energy consumption, Audi is striving to encourage the adoption of the EVs by offering a two-year unlimited fast charging on the Electrify America network.

The 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron starts at $89,800, plus a $1,195 destination charge. However, it doesn’t qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit because of its importation from Europe and exceeding the $80,000 cap.
