Suicide bombing kills two, including a policeman, in Pakistan

PakistanPeshawar  - Two people, including a policeman, were killed in a suicide attack at a security check post in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), officials said.

A suicide bomber, who was riding in a motor rickshaw, blew himself up as he approached the security checkpoint in Bannu district.

"One policeman and a civilian died in the bombing," Deputy Superintendent Police Amanullah Khan said. Four policemen and two by-passers were injured.

The attack came days after pro-Taliban militants entrenched in Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan suspended peace talks that had started just last month with the new government in a bid to revise President Pervez Musharraf's hard-handed policy.

They said the government had declined to accept their demand for the withdrawal of troops from the tribal belt, which is believed to have safe havens for al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters launching border attacks into Afghanistan.

Prior to the peace process, the Islamic extremists had halted their suicide bombings campaign against security personnel that killed more than 1,000 people over the last 14 months. (dpa)
