Nirupam threatens self-immolation on power tariff row
Sanjay Nirupam, the General Secretary of AICC, has said threatened to self-immolation himself if his demand for reduction of power prices in Mumbai is not accepted by the power providers in the city.
Nirupam is on a hunger strike outside the Reliance Energy office in Kandivali. He said that he will immolate himself outside Reliance ADA group chief Anil Ambani's house if his demand for lower energy prices is not accepted by the company. Nirupam has also urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister PrithvirajChavan to conduct an audit of all power companies supplying electricity to financial capital of the country.
Nirupam also said that his fast is not on the third day and he is in good health. Mumbai suburbs guardian minister Mohammed ArifNaseem Khan, city Congress president JanardhanChandurkar and senior leader Kripashankar Singh have visited the MP from Mumbai North to express their support.
Power providers had announced a 20 per cent cut in power tariff for domestic consumers, industries and powerlooms of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MahaVitaran) but the city of Mumbai was not included in this power cut. The state government had said that the tariff cut will only be applicable consumers whose consumption is of less than 300 units.
