Hero MotoCorp workers threaten strike over wage increment issue
Production at Hero MotoCorp's Gurgaon plant could come to a standstill as the labour union has threatened to go on strike in case the management does not agree to their wage increase demands.
The manufacturer's management has offered an increment of nearly Rs 7,000 running over a period of three years. This figure is close to the increment of Rs 6,500 it had paid to workers at its Dharuhera plant in 2011. But, union president Kanwalpreet Singh emphasized that workers would not accept anything less than their recommended increment band of Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000.
As per the union president's claims, the average gross salary for an experienced worker in Gurgaon is nearly Rs 39,000, but various deductions, including repayment of loans taken, slashes the take home considerably.
Speaking on the issue, he added, "If they do not agree to the increment levels suggested by us, we will have to go on strike."
On the other hand, the management of Hero MotoCorp claimed that it has always given top priority to the wellbeing and comforts of the company's workers. But taking a tough stand on this issue, the management declared that workers' pressure tactics could not coerce it into decisions.
Hero MotoCorp's Gurgaon plant has a workforce of around 16,000 people, of which nearly 1,200 are permanent employees and the remaining are casual workers. The plant has a daily average output of roughly 7,000 units.
