Ex-Cong leader Romesh Sharma gets 2 yrs imprisonment in tax evasion case
New Delhi, Mar 31 : A Delhi court on Monday sentenced former Congress leader Romesh Sharma to two years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a tax evasion case.
Romesh Sharma, front man of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was convicted by the court for evading Rs 50 crore income tax in a 12-year-old case.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kanwaljeet Arora convicted Sharma for not depositing Rs 50 crores after holding him guilty under section 276-c (2) and 277 of the Income Tax Act.
“The investigating agency, Income Tax department, has proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. I convicted him for these offences under the said act,” Arora said in his 19-page judgement.
Soon after the verdict Romesh Sharma’s lawyer Harish Gulati said that they would appeal against the statement. (ANI)
