NRO a ‘non-issue’, MNA’s should help govt. to address ‘real issues’ : Gilani
Islamabad, Nov. 4 : Terming the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) as a ‘non-issue’, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has urged the members of the National Assembly
(MNA) to let the judiciary decide the fate of the controversial ordinance, and help the government address the ‘real issues’ confronting the people of the country.
Addressing the House a day after the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led government decided against tabling the NRO in parliament, Gilani said the issue should be decided by the court of law.
“Let the court decide it. We will accept whatever the court decides. The House should not be divided on a non-issue. The focus should be on real issues... we have to show political maturity,” The Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.
Gilani called on all the lawmakers to assist the government to fight the real issues facing the country, and urged them to protect what he termed a ‘fragile democracy’.
“We must protect our fragile democracy. We will fulfil the pledges we made under the Charter of Democracy (CoD),” he said.
Speaking on the issue, opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali praised the government for not tabling the NRO in the House and reiterated the Pakistan Muslaim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) demand of prosecuting former President General Pervez Musharraf under high treason charges. (ANI)
