Cavs to sign Smith for playoff push, Spurs to get Gooden
Los Angeles - The Cleveland Cavaliers, looking to beef up their front court for the playoff push, will sign recently-released veteran forward Joe Smith on Wednesday.
"After careful consideration of his options, Joe has decided that the Cavs are the best fit," Smith's agent, Dan Fegan, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Smith was released by the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the 14-year veteran must wait to clear waivers before signing what is believed to be a one-year contract.
Smith is expected to fill in for Ben Wallace, who suffered a fractured right leg last week, that will most likely keep him sidelined for the final quarter of the regular season.
Smith's 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds average this season, is well below his career numbers of 11.7 points and 6.8 boards.
Cavaliers superstar LeBron James is all smiles at the prospect of having Smith rejoin the team, after he was dealt last summer in a three-team trade that brought Mo Williams over from the Milwaukee Bucks.
"One of the best guys," James recently said. "One of the best teammates I've ever had."
The San Antonio Spurs will also add muscle up front by inking Drew Gooden, once the rugged 6-foot-10 big man clears waivers on Wednesday.
According to the San Antonio Express, Gooden will be changing his address for the third time in less than two months to join the Western Conference powerhouse.
Dealt by the Chicago Bulls to lowly Sacramento, hours before the February 19 trade deadline, Gooden agreed to a contract buyout on Sunday night, making him eligible for post-season play.
Slowed by a groin injury much of the season, the seven-year NBA veteran Gooden, is averaging 13.1 points and 8.7 rebounds in 32 games. (dpa)
