Turkey condemns Israel's actions in Gaza as "humanitarian disgrace"

Recep Tayyip Erdogan Ankara - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday repeated calls for Israel to put an immediate halt to its attacks in the Gaza Strip and also made a veiled criticism of the United States, describing the "multiple standard" of those who have failed to condemn the attacks.

In a hard hitting speech to parliamentary colleagues, Erdogan repeated Turkey's condemnation of Israel's military actions describing the operations as an "humanitarian disgrace" and a "stain on history's page."

"This is no way to solve the problems," a visibly angry Erdogan said. The prime minister also took aim at countries such as the United States which have failed to condemn Israel's actions.

"Why are those who got involved so quickly in Georgia ... Why are they quiet now," Erdogan said, apparently referring to quick US action to send aid to Georgia following Russia's invasion on the Black Sea littoral country in August. "This not a double standard, it is a multiple standard," Erdogan said to the cheers of his fellow Justice and Development Party parliamentarians.

Erdogan said the operations had put in jeopardy a range of hopeful developments in the Middle East, including the Syrian-Israeli peace talks in which Turkey has been acting in the role of mediator.

"The hopes for peace (today) are unfortunately black," Erdogan said before making a direct call for Turks to donate to a Palestinian aid fund set up by the government. (dpa)
