NHTSA: Pontiac G6 brake light recall may be expanded to include over 550,000 vehicles

NHTSA: Pontiac G6 brake light recall may be expanded to include over 550,000 vehiclesAccording to the documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website on Friday, the small recall of Pontiac G6 midsize cars may likely be expanded by US regulators to include up to 550,000 vehicles.

The recall - issued by General Motors (GM) in 2009 due to problems with brake lights and cruise control - thus far affects nearly 8,000 Pontiac G6 midsize cars; all of which were manufactured in 2005.

However, noting that the recall may be expanded to all the Pontiac G6 midsize cars of the 2005-2009 model years, the NHTSA said that the move is an upshot of the fact that it has, ever since GM's 2009-issued recall, received over 200 complaints from Pontiac G6 owners about brake lights not coming on when brakes were applied, or the lights coming on when brake pedals were not pressed.

In addition, the NHTSA also said that it has also received complaints that the cruise control Pontiac G6 gets disengaged unexpectedly.

Though the NHTSA does not identify either the complaints or their place of residence, it did mention that, in one of the complaints received in December last year, a 2007 G6 Pontiac had said: "I have been having issues with my brake lights coming on while I am accelerating, and the brake lights go off when I brake, putting me at higher risk for an accident."
