New York Police Department could be involved in editing of Wikipedia entries
According to an investigation by Capital New York, computers with IP addresses from the New York Police Department headquarters were related to edits made on some Wikipedia pages for high-profile police incident victims. The IP addresses accessed Wikipedia entries for Sean Bell, Eric Garner and Amadou Diallo.
According to Capitals, it is not known that how many actual users did that since NYPD computers can access a variety of IP addresses available to the department. Earlier also, IP addresses from the 1 Police Plaza network were found editing potentially incriminating Wikipedia entries.
According to Capital New York, such addresses have been used for editing articles on stop-and-frisk and some police leaders.
According to a Wikipedia user operating from the NYPD's network address, "He [Bell] was in the news for about two months, and now no one except Al Sharpton cares anymore. The police shoot people every day, and times with a lot more than 50 bullets. This incident is more news than notable".
Stephen Davis, NYPD deputy commissioner of public information, said in an email to The Huffington Post that they are carrying out an internal investigation to find out who may have accessed the Department's server. He also added that such incidents did not come from computers located at Police Headquarters.
The editing of Eric Garner's Wikipedia page was having description that Garner was 'considerably larger' than any of the current officers and the word 'chokehold' was replaced twice with less harsh language. NYPD spokeswoman Det. Cheryl Crispin said that the matter is being investigated.
It appears that the Garner entry have been edited the most and many changes have been made on the page.
