New developments in power sector
Indian power sector, which has recently seen some very welcome developments, is going to see some more. With the summers setting in, the power situation has become bad and environment has turned hot.
The same can be said about the entry of private companies in the power sector. While the private players are trying to grab a piece of the Indian market, National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) has decided that it will eye both India and overseas markets.
Talking to business channel CNBC TV 18, SK Garg, CMD of the company said that it is going to invest $5.6 billion in setting up of two power plants in Myanmar. Both of them will be hydroelectric in nature and is a part of company's plans to expand overseas. The total capacity of the plants will be 520MW. He also said that the company will be commissioning 12 projects during the current plan.
Out of this, two plants with 1,030 MW capacities have already been delivered. The rest will start operations soon. Meanwhile, Nuclear Power Corporation's (NPCIL) first indigenous heavy water reactor will start in Gujarat by 2015. This would bring a new era in nuclear power sector of India.
