Kathmandu, June 6 : The suggestion by the Maoists that an eminent person from the civil society should be appointed as the President of the young republic has not elicited favourable response from different political parties.

The Nepali Congress (NC) and the Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) leaders have said that the suggestion would not resolve the deadlock in Nepal.

Nepalnews quoted NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel as saying that the Maoist proposal was not a good idea.

“Selection of the President must be done on the basis of understanding. A senior, experienced person with contribution in political movement should be selected as the head of the state,” Poudel said.

UML General Secretary Jhalnath Khanal said that the proposal would not help to resolve the current deadlock.

After the Nepali Congress and the UML had rejected Maoists’ demand to have both the Prime Minister and the President for themselves, the meeting of the central secretariat of the Maoists, on Thursday, had decided to back a person from civil society for the post of ceremonial President in Nepal.
