Myanmar opposition holds public campaign for constitution reform

Aung-San-Suu-KyiNai Pyi Taw, May 17 : Leader of Myanmar opposition party National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi Saturday called on the public to back efforts aimed at introducing reforms in the country's constitution.

The first ever campaign between NLD and the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society was held at Bo Sein Mhan Football ground in Bahan Township here, attracting over 40,000 marchers, Xinhua reported.

At the campaign, the NLD and 88 Generation specifically focused on informing the public about Article 436 of Chapter 12 of the constitution, which says that major charter reforms can only take place with the support of more than 75 percent of lawmakers.

Suu Kyi explained to the public that amendment of Article 436 of the Constitution is important to allow for changes to the whole constitution.

She emphasised that the constitution reform is the main reason for the emergence of a genuine democratic union in the future.

She also urged the government and military to participate in constitution reforms, calling for amending the constitution in the union parliament under the rule of law framework.

NLD and 88 Generation planned to launch the nationwide signature campaign May 27-July 19.

Another campaign will kick off in Mandalay Sunday.

Meanwhile, there have been widespread calls for constitutional amendment ahead of the 2015 general elections. (IANS)
