Islamabad, Nov 29: President Pervez Musharraf was sworn in for a second term on Thursday, but this time as a civilian leader, a day after quitting as Army Chief and fulfilling a promise many Pakistanis doubted he would keep.

Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Doggar administered the oath to the President under the 1973 Constitution.

The president’s oath taking ceremony was held at at Aiwan-e-Sadar, Islamabad.

Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro, caretaker cabinet members, former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, PML (Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Speaker National Assembly Chaudhry Amir Hussain, former federal ministers, foreign diplomats and top civil and military officials attended the ceremony.

Musharraf after serving in the Pakistan Army for 46 years, with nine years as Army Chief, relinquished the post on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani has assumed command of the Pakistan Army as Chief of Army Staff today at GHQ.

The Pakistan Army contingent presented a guard of honour to General Kayani at the GHQ. (ANI)
