Marvel In Limelight Over Possible Lead Concerns

Washigton: Marvel Entertainment Group Inc has blocked consignments of its Chinese-made Curious George products, and may call back the toys if emergency examination indicates hazardous lead levels in them.

The company said that it was taking the action after the advocacy group Center for Environmental Health stated that it detected a Curious George doll having 10 times the legally-permitted lead level.

Marvel said, “We have already reached out to the Center for Environmental Health for their help in identifying the product they tested and the full details of their testing. In the meantime, we have halted all shipments of our Curious George product line and are pulling various samples from the factory for rush lead testing.”

Over the last few months, Mattel Inc has called back approximately 21 million Chinese-made toys due to excessive levels of lead paint.

Lead is poisonous and results into grave health problems, comprising brain damage, to kids when ingested.

The company told that it would start recalling products, if emergency testing proves unnecessary lead quantities in the products under consideration. The company said that all its product lines were being examined by an independent research lab.

Marvel spokesman David Collins said that the company started selling a line of Curious George dolls, action figures and accessories linked to an animated feature film and television series in 2006.

Mr. Collins added that the Curious George products make up a small part of the company’s yearly sales.

The nonprofit Center for Environmental Health told that it also discovered high lead levels in vinyl lunch boxes and backpacks prepared by privately-owned Sassafras Enterprises. The group charged a legal notice impeaching Sassafras of breaching a 1986 California law, which forbids exposing consumers to carcinogens without warning.
