Maruti Suzuki not to take back dismissed employees
India's leading automaker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has indicated that it will not take back any of the employees who were fired following a violent riot at the company's plant in Manesar in Haryana state in July this year.
"We have always maintained that the sacked workers won't ever be taken back, and that stand continues," a company spokesman said.
The remarks came after it was reported that the sacked employees are planning to hold hunger strikes and peaceful protest to try and get their jobs back. According to media reports, the sacked workers have formed a temporary committee and have sent a notice to the state government information them about the hunger strike on Wednesday. The workers are also planning to hold a rally on Thursday.
A riot by workers that left Awanish Kumar Dev, General Manager HR dead in a fire accident and resulted in 90 employees being jailed, affected the company's operations and disrupt supplies of models. The company is yet to estimate the damage caused by the violent rioting by the workers at the site that began after the management sacked a member of the workforce over a disagreement with the supervisor. Several people were reportedly injured, including the company's Japanese officials and a part of the assembly line was burnt.
