Maruti Suzuki might double capacity at its Gujarat plant
India’s leading auto maker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSI) might be planning to double its capacity for its proposed car manufacturing facility in the western state of Gujarat.
The company is planning to open its plant in 2015-16 and it will be the company’s first facility outside the state of Haryana. MSI’s manufacturing facility in Manesar in Haryana faced a violent riot recently. A riot by workers that left Awanish Kumar Dev, General Manager HR dead in a fire accident and resulted in 90 employees being jailed, is likely to affect the company’s operations and disrupt supplies of models.
There were suggestions in the section of media that the state government might have something to do with the riots at the company’s Haryana plant. Media reports have indicated that the state government is using recurring law & order problems in Haryana to convince the company to shift its entire manufacturing base to Gujarat. The state government has dismissed suggestions that it is involved in the matter.
Maruti is investing Rs 4,000 crore in the plant in Mehsana in Gujarat and Suzuki Motor Chairman Osamu Suzuki had visited the state and held a meeting with chief minister Narendra Modi.
