Man Says New York Police Sodomised Him
New York prosecutors are investigating allegations made by Michael Mineo, 24, of Brooklyn that last week, he was beaten and sodomised by police officers in a Brooklyn subway station.
According to Kevin Mosley, his lawyer, on the afternoon of 15th October 2008, several uniformed police officers approached Mineo near Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, who they suspected was smoking marijuana. Forcing him to the ground and handcuffing him, they pulled his pants down and shoved something forcibly into his rectum. Issuing him a summons for disorderly conduct, the police left him writhing in pain.
Severe abdominal pain and rectal injuries caused Mineo, to be hospitalized for five days and has been asked to return for additional tests. Though Mineo is Hispanic and white, the incident has raked up the case of Abner Louima, the Haitian immigrant who was beaten and sodomised with a broomstick in a Brooklyn police station in 1997, sparking outrage at NYPD brutality.
Though, Paul Browne, chief spokesman for the police department states, the police Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the incident, the duty status of the five officers in question remains unchanged. Browne asserts that Mineo’s assertion of being sodomised is not upheld by on the scene of crime independent civilian witnesses, who say they did not see any police misconduct.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a law enforcement official says incident details cast doubt on claims made by Mineo, as Mineo says he was shocked with a stun-gun, though none of the officers carried any such weapon. While, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office has refused to comment on the investigations, it has been revealed that Mineo was arrested on charges of gang assault and criminal possession of a weapon in June.
However, a news conference is being held on Saturday by Al Sharpton, civil rights leader, though Mineo may not be able to attend as he is still in hospital.
