As the tractor manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra has already taken up the popularity of the Chakan belt by opening its new facility in the area which is spread across 700 acres of area.

The global SUV from Mahindra's door will be rolled out of the same plant by the end-2010 or at the outset of 2011. Code-named W201, the product is expected to be mostly exported to US and is often is rumored to be trumping the now-seasoned Scorpio.

However, the new plant Chakan will have double the capacity of its five other plants at three lakh units per annum. M&M has plants in Kandivli, Nasik and Igatpuri and a plant Chakan makes a lot of sense for the company as it will provide them with geographical advantage.

The company started building its plant in 2008 and the group has invested Rs. 2,500 crore in the first phase out of the total Rs. 5,000 crore. The company is expected to announce the launch of its pick-up trucks to be launched in the US market in few weeks to come.
