Magic, Jazz continue to slump as playoffs approach

Magic, Jazz continue to slump as playoffs approachLos Angeles - The Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz are losing games, players and their edge, which is no way to prepare for the postseason. The Magic fell for the third time in four games Saturday night, dropping a 103-93 road decision to the rookie-laden New Jersey Nets as Turkish star Hedo Turkoglu was carried off with a sprained left ankle.

The loss means Orlando (58-22) cannot catch Boston for second place in the Eastern Conference and likely would not have home-court advantage in both the conference semifinals and conference finals.

"I don't know what to call this," said superstar center Dwight Howard, who managed just seven points and eight rebounds. "I just know we have to get out of it soon or we are going to be in trouble come playoff time."

The Jazz have lost three in a row and six of seven following a 118-108 home setback to the shorthanded Golden State Warriors as star guard Deron Williams suffered an abdominal strain in the final minute.

Utah (47-33) is virtually relegated to eighth place in the West as it fell two games behind New Orleans and Dallas with two to play. If the Jazz remain eighth, they would play the powerful Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.

"This is bad," said Williams, who had 26 points and 14 assists. "We are just limping into the playoffs. It's like we are kind of content with being there and being the eighth seed instead of trying to better ourselves."

Already without All-Star forward Rashard Lewis (knee tendinitis), the Magic dug themselves a 57-47 halftime hole and fell behind by 15 points in the third quarter.

"It was terrible," Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We are playing with no energy and a lack of defensive commitment. When you do that you are going to get killed."

Playing without injured All-Star guard Devin Harris, the Nets (33-47) stung the Magic with 11 three-pointers. Vince Carter had 27 points and nine assists and rookie starters Brook Lopez, Ryan Anderson and Chris Douglas-Roberts combined for 32 points.

The Magic closed to 87-82 with just under eight minutes to go, but Bobby Simmons hit a three-pointer and Turkoglu - who scored 16 points - left less than a minute later.

France's Mikael Pietrus and Tony Battie scored 14 points apiece for Orlando, which allowed New Jersey to shoot 54 percent from the field.

Utah had similar problems as Golden State - which used just seven players - shot 55 percent. C. J. Watson scored a career-high 38 points, making 10-of-16 shots and 16-of-16 free throws.

The Jazz trailed by 13 points at halftime and 100-82 with 9:26 left before rallying behind Turkey's Mehmet Okur, who scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Utah closed to 103-98 with 3:04 to go, but rookie Anthony Morrow had a three-point play and Watson found France's Ronny Turiaf for a layup before making two free throws for a 110-99 bulge.

"They had us under control all night," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said.

Rookie Rob Kurz scored a season-high 21 points and Kelenna Azubuike had 18 for Golden State (29-51). Carlos Boozer had 25 points and 12 boards for Utah.
