L&T inks MoU with US-based GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), India's largest engineering and construction conglomerate, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, one of the largest nuclear power plant vendors in the world, for the construction of nuclear power plants in India.
Under the deal, L&T and GE Hitachi will co-operate to set up Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) and Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) nuclear power plants in India.
According to an official release, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy will serve as the technology provider of certain ABWR nuclear island equipment and components, while L&T's role will be to engineer, manufacture and construct these power equipments.
GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy is a joint venture between U. S conglomerate General Electric Co and Japan's Hitachi. The market analysts believe that agreement with L&T is an important step in gearing up to meet the country's power needs through nuclear energy.
